Features and Application of CAPS
Features
CAPS is the common name for N-cyclohexyl-3-aminopropanesulfonic acid, a chemical used as buffering agent in biochemistry.
CAPS is a zwitterionic buffering agent. It is a cyclohexylamine buffer that is useful for a pH range of 9.7 – 11.1.
Applications
CAPS commonly used to study enzymatic processes above physiological pH.
CAPS buffer is widely used in Western and immunoblotting experiments as well as protein sequencing and identification. Used in the electrotransfer of proteins to PVDF (sc-3723) or nitrocellulose membranes (sc-3718, sc-3724). The high pH of this buffer makes it useful for the transfer of proteins with a pI>8.5.
CAPS displays only weak or negligible complexation capabilities for some metals making it a suitable non-coordinating buffer for use in solutions containing metal ions.
CAPS is suitable for use with the bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay.
