Features and Application of TES
Features
TES is a structural analog to Tris buffer.
It is one of the ethanesulfonic acid series of biological buffers developed by Good et al.
It is one of the Good's buffers: midrange pKa, maximum water solubility and minimum solubility in all other solvents, minimal salt effects, minimal change in pKa with temperature, chemically and enzymatically stable, minimal absorption in visible or UV spectral range, and easily synthesized.
TES probably exists in solution as a zwitterion. Because the pKa is 7.45(physiological pH) this buffer has considerable potential for a variety of biological applications.
Applications
TES is used to make buffer solutions.
It is one of the Good's buffers and can be used to make buffer solutions in the pH range 6.8–8.2.
It is one of the components of Test yolk buffer medium used for refrigeration and transport of semen.
